The Ikara Head Trail is a quiet bushwalk in the Mount Victoria area of the Blue Mountains, leading to a vantage point with scenic views of the Grose Valley.

This relatively easy 2.8 km walk is enjoyable year-round, but during the spring, you’ll often be treated to a display of pink flannel flowers and other native wildflowers.

Getting There

The trailhead for this walk is located along Victoria Falls Road, approximately 3.6 km from the Great Western Highway.

As the track is not signposted and lacks a dedicated car park, it can be quite challenging to find if you haven’t visited before.

The trailhead for the more popular Asgard Swamp Track is just a few hundred metres further up the road. It may be easier to park there, as there is more space available.

The exact location of the trailhead is included in the table above and illustrated in the map below. Please note that Google Maps does not currently provide accurate information regarding the start of this walk.

Track Notes

At 2.8 km one way, the Ikara Head Trail is fairly short and easy. It is quite a flat walking track, though the path can be a bit overgrown at times, particularly near the start.

This walk is located in an isolated area where you may well be the only person on the trail. It is always a good idea to let someone know your whereabouts before you head off.

Below is a satellite view map of the walk.

The Trail

Once you’re ready to start this short but enjoyable walk, look for the path heading northwest, as shown in the photo below.

Keep in mind that the trailhead may look slightly different when you arrive, as the vegetation is constantly changing.

The first half of the walk passes through a forest of trees and low scrub, with several sections where the path can be somewhat overgrown.

After about 20 minutes of walking, the track leaves the forest behind and emerges into a more open landscape characterised by large rock formations and scenic district views.

This is also where, with a bit of luck and good timing, you may come across a vibrant display of wildflowers, which is always a beautiful sight.

As you continue through this open terrain, the path soon arrives at its destination: Ikara Head.

The tip of the headland is a large, open space with plenty of room to explore and take in the scenic views over the Grose Valley and cliff walls.

Like most headlands in the Blue Mountains, the area is unfenced, so it’s important to stay well away from the cliff edges, especially in windy conditions.
