Kalang Falls Walk (Scenic Waterfall in Kanangra-Boyd)

Kalang Falls is a small yet scenic waterfall on Kanangra Brook in Kanangra-Boyd National Park, part of the Greater Blue Mountains.

A short but steep walking track from the car park on Kanangra Walls Road leads to the falls, with a spectacular lookout to visit halfway along the trail.

The walk starts from the same trailhead as the Kanangra Walls Walk, making it easy to combine both in one trip.

Getting There

Kalang Falls is located within Kanangra-Boyd National Park, about 180 km from Sydney and 80 km from Katoomba.

To get there, you’ll need to drive to the end of Kanangra Walls Road, where a car park is available (see location on map).

The quickest and shortest route is via Jenolan Caves Road in Hartley. Follow this road past the Jenolan Caves, then turn onto Kanangra Walls Road. Note that this road is unsealed, but is usually in reasonably good condition. A 4WD vehicle is not strictly required.

If Jenolan Caves Road is closed (which does happen sometimes), you’ll need to take a detour via Duckmaloi Road in Hampton and Edith Road in Oberon. From Edith Road, you can turn onto Kanangra Walls Road.

Below is a map of the walk with the car park and the two highlights marked:

Track Notes

The walk to Kalang Falls is fairly short and generally easy, though it does involve a steep descent into the gully.

The track is well-maintained and easy to follow, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

Start of the Walk

Once you’ve parked and are ready to start, head to the signpost (pictured below) to begin your hike.

The first half of the walk to the lookout follows an easy, flat path through a peaceful landscape of heath vegetation and low trees.

Along the way, the trail crosses two intersections with the Kanangra Plateau Walk. Simply continue straight at both to reach the lookout, about 500 metres in.

Also known as Kanangra-Boyd Lookout, Kanangra Walls Lookout offers panoramic views over the Kanangra Creek Valley, framed by towering cliff walls, with Mount Cloudmaker visible in the distance.

From the lookout, continue along the trail past the signpost for Kalang Falls.

Descent to Kalang Falls

The trail immediately descends along a steep path with a series of stairs. While it may look challenging, it’s not as difficult as it seems, and there are plenty of nice views to enjoy along the way.

After about 10 minutes of descending, you’ll reach a large wooden viewing platform right in front of Kanangra Brook.

You can see Kalang Falls from here, but for a better view, look for the path to the left of the platform and follow it towards the waterfall.

Depending on the creek’s water level, you may need to get your feet wet to get closer to the falls.

If the weather is warm, the pool in front of the waterfall makes for a refreshing swim, though the water is almost always cold due to the permanent shade.

The waterfall itself is quite scenic, but its canyon-like setting is what makes this spot truly peaceful and beautiful to explore.

Like most waterfalls, Kalang Falls is at its best after heavy rain. During dry periods, the flow can be minimal, so it’s worth considering when planning your visit.
