Getting There

The trailhead for the walk to the Peckmans Plateau is along Cliff Drive, a few hundred metres north of the Cahill’s Lookout (see map location).

From the Great Western Highway, follow Valley Rd, Narrow Neck Rd, and Cliff Dr, until you see the Peckmans Plateau signpost on the northern side of the road.

There is only space for two or three cars at that signpost, so you may need to park at the Cahill’s Lookout car park nearby.

Note that there is a walking trail parallel to the road between the Cahill’s Lookout car park and the trail to the Peckmans Plateau.

Below is a map of the short walking trail to the lookout.

About Peckmans Plateau

The Peckmans Plateau is a small land area in Katoomba facing the northeastern section of the Megalong Valley, bounded by escarpments.

It was named after Harry Peckman, a horse cab and coach driver and well-known resident of the Katoomba area from 1884 onwards.

From the signpost on Cliff Drive, follow the short walking trail (approximately 200 metres) through the bush to a fenced lookout.

This is a very easy walk with only a few steps, and the fencing at the end makes this a nice little family-friendly outing.

The path is a bit overgrown in parts, and perhaps a bit uninspiring overall, but the vantage point at the end of the trail is beautiful.

The fenced Peckmans Plateau Lookout is usually very quiet and still very much unknown. This is surprising because the views are quite spectacular.

From the lookout, you’ll see the Megalong Valley to the southeast, the Norths Lookout straight ahead, and the Megalong Creek flowing below.

A visit to the Peckmans Plateau Lookout is best combined with a visit to the Cahill’s Lookout because they are so close to one another.

We also recommend visiting the Narrow Neck Lookout, the Landslide Lookout, and the Eagle Hawk Lookout. These three lookouts can all be easily reached via Cliff Drive and are very close by.

For even more great lookouts in Katoomba, visit the Reids Plateau. You’ll discover three beautiful viewpoints there with amazing valley and waterfall views.
